Dredging Company

Hile Group began a partnership with an international marine company in 2007, after their aggressive efforts to improve safety began to produce fewer and fewer results. Although the company had initial success reducing incident and injury rates with traditional tactics, the company soon hit a plateau that jeopardized the safety of the crew and threatened its competitive edge.

Relying on expertise in safety and performance management, Hile Group worked with the company to retool existing safety efforts and launch new interventions to target the issues that affect how people do their jobs and bolster the company’s safety culture. Consultants used their expertise in systems thinking to customize services to improve the company as a system, from the front line to the executive level. Hile Group helped embed the Safety Department into Operations, redesign their Safety Management System, launch a new Green Hat orientation program, establish a close calls reporting system without a third party, and develop a Safety Action Plan.

By 2009, the company was thriving, even in a tightly competitive market and weak economy. And improvements continue to build, securing the company a reputation as an industry safety leader. Domestic and international fleet Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) have reduced by 50 percent, Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR) by 64 percent, and claims related to personal injuries by 100 percent. As a result, the company has been effectively positioned to tender bids for Big Oil, and US operations have been able to protect against Jones Act incursions by foreign flags.
