Transferring Learning

Hile Group classrooms are powerful places to be in. We empower participants to live what they learn long after our course has ended. Learners who participate in a Hile Group course come to understand that the people with whom they work greatly influence how successfully they can apply new knowledge and skills back on the job.

Our commitment to ensuring transfer of learning drives our course design and follow up.

Before the Course

Prior to attending a course, learners complete a full pre-course assignment. In this pre-work, course participants identify the people who do or should care about what they learn as course take-aways and meet with their boss to talk about what is expected of them as a result of the experience. In addition, they will assess their current experience and skills related to the topic, identify an Application Project—the real-world context in which they will apply what is learned back on the job—and provide information to our facilitators that will help us to customize the course to their specific needs.

During the Course

Once the course begins, “participate” is the key verb! Hile Group facilitators are extremely skilled at building a safe environment in which learners test ideas, disagree, wonder aloud, ask any question. Course participants work intensely on the Action Projects they have brought with them to class. They listen hard to others’ stories—and tell a few stories of their to hook new concepts and strategies into what they already know. They offer one another coaching and feedback, challenges and affirmation. They lay the groundwork for long-term connections, the kind where “pick up the phone and give me a call” is a sincere offer.

After the Course

Following the course, Hile Group facilitators provide participants with flip chart transcriptions of up to 75-pages and make themselves available for telephone or electronic coaching, troubleshooting, and feedback on learners’ Action Projects and beyond. Our back-to-work conversations with participants and their bosses have ACCOUNTABILITY written all over them: they extend the learning back to the work site and support planning for application and extension of new skills.
